30: Are You An Intercessor?
Thursday, May 13, 2021 by Lyvita Brooks and Guest Juin Killingsworth

Please enjoy this podcast on your favorite podcast platform. Although efforts were made in editing, this transcript may include a few typos. It’s difficult to catch some minor errors. Enjoy!

Saints, have you ever said, “I better get another person to pray about this situation because he or she can get a prayer through,” or what about, “ ”I wish I could pray like him or her because I know God heard their prayers,” or “We better tell grandma or grandpa because they will talk to God and He always answers their prayers.”

Well you aren’t the only one. I’ve said that too. Let’s talk about the spiritual discipline of intercessory prayer. Who can intercede? Is it only for the super spiritual Christians that are seniors who have nothing else to do but talk to God or is it you? Well that’s what we are going to talk about today.

So gather your Bible, journal, pen, and find a comfy place to pray because this is going to be “an awakening type” of episode.

Oh yeah, I’m doing something new to the ending where I share some last minute thoughts. Please don’t stop listening until after you hear Shalom. This is episode 30. Now, on to the intro….

Welcome to Hanging Out With Jesus Podcast where we equip and encourage you to spend more time with the Triune God through practicing the spiritual disciplines to help you let go of the noises, the clutter that hinders you from knowing who you are and whose you are in Christ Jesus.

Hi, I’m Lyvita Brooks, your host, author and blogger on a mission to equip the saints to do the work God’s called you to do and to build up the body of Christ until we all come into unity.

Therefore Saints, if this episode is a blessing to you then scroll down and write a review and rate it, so others will know what a blessing it is to you, and don’t forget to invite others to join us. If you are new, consider subscribing to this podcast so you will receive notifications of new releases.

Now, come walk with me, where we intentionally practice being in the presence of God. So stop what you are doing. “Cause it’s time to Hang Out With Jesus, and me, Lyvita. Let’s pray…

3:25 - Prayer

3:59 - Well Saints, I know we all have side that someone else can get a prayer through and must be more spiritual than yourself. But let’s not get it twisted. We are all called to be super spiritual Christians who live a praying and righteous life, and study God’s Word so we will know, believe and understand that our God is God. You see, Christianity, nor your faith has anything to do with what you look like or your age…It has everything to do with your relationship to God. Do you love Him enough to follow His commandments found in the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you? Do you?

Intercessory Prayer and Bible study go hand-in-hand. As you study God’s word, you find out God’s heart about His people, about you, and why He wants you to be a part of His blessings through intercession.

Let’s be clear we are all to partake in intercessory prayer. It is every Christian’s gift, privilege, command and should be a desire to do.

5:36 - We learn about intercessory prayer from looking at the life of Jesus Christ. Now if Jesus is our example that means that all Believers that should be doing it, right? You, me, all believers that follow the God of the Bible whose Son is Lord, Jesus the Christ, right?

Ya’ll Jesus is our Great Intercessor. He stands in the gap for us. Romans 8:34 tells us that Jesus is interceding for us right now.  We are His followers. We, You, me are an intercessor!

OK, turn with me if you can to Colossians 4: 2

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving”

6:50 - Saints, intercessory prayer, as I said earlier, is: a privilege and a command. We see the Apostle Paul giving us a reminder again of what Jesus said in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Timothy 2: 8 says, “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;”

Luke 18:1 says, “And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.”

Ephesians 6:18 talks about making supplications for all saints

And 1 Chronicles 5:20 talks about God’s people crying out to Him.

We are Intercessors!

9:51 - So you might be asking, well, Lyvita what’s intercessory prayer? The word intercession is derived from the Latin word for “go between” or “to come between”, which means both “obstruct” and “to interpose on behalf of” someone. This is what Christ does for us. He stands between us and the Father. That’s why we pray, “In Jesus name” because it’s by His sacrifice, His stripes, the giving of His life for the punishment of our sins, that we are made righteous and can approach the throne of God because in and of ourselves, we couldn’t come close because of our sin.

It is through intercessory prayer that we bring the needs of others before God through Christ. The most important part to understand about intercessory prayer is that we are in God’s presence pleading for, requesting, and asking, with our whole heart on behalf of another. That’s intercessory.

And for clarity, I’m talking about bringing those needs to the I AM, Yahweh, Adonai, Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

11:39 - So you maybe thinking about now: Lyvita is intercessory praying all that necessary because God already knows what everyone needs?

Never forget, that prayer (talking to God), rather it is intercessory or not, it’s a privilege, a gift, and we are commanded to do it by our Savior, we are to be persistent in doing it. Also God is always with us in our lives and knows our every need but we must invite Him into our struggles. God is not pushy. You are either for Him or Not. You either follow His commands or not. There is no grey area when it comes to loving and serving God. Intercessory prayer is another form of serving God and others because you are keeping God’s command to pray for others and supporting another by praying for them. Aren’t we to love God, our neighbor as ourselves? This is just one way as a follower of Christ you do that.

12:58_ - So you maybe asking well Lyvita what’s the difference between prayer and intercession? Good question, I asked myself that same question after reading 1 Timothy 2: 1-6. Let me read it to you:

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time

We are urged, which means strongly desire, (it’s really a command as we read earlier in 1 Thessalonians 5)…we are urged to make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings.

15:24 - Supplications are asking God for something, petitions we ask from God, i.e., “Lord, I need a job.” But this comes with abiding in Christ; knowing what to ask for, instead of me-me and I-I type requests. It’s like the friend in Luke 11:5-13. Listen as I read it…

And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[c] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for[d] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

It’s asking, seeking, and knocking; it’s being persistent like the friend was in Luke 11.

17:21 - Now let’s return to our scripture 1 Timothy 2: 1. Paul is also urging Timothy to talk to God in the form or prayers. Think of prayers as times when you pray with hands folded and a bowed head. Think of it as asking God questions about what you are studying in His word and stopping to listen for an answer. You can even write your prayers and then pray them back. You can find them in devotionals. Prayers are times when you are talking to God and listening for an answer.

18:17 - Now, the third way of praying is intercession. Simply put is talking to God on behalf of another or organization or cause.

18:33 - And finally, thanksgivings are telling God you are thankful about something. Praising Him can be included in this for what He has done for you. An appreciative, thankful and gracious heart sharing your love for the God you serve.

19:02 - Here’s the clincher. They all overlap and they are all praying. Because they are all talking to God. Paul is separating them out because He wants us to know, I believe, that we, all believers are to do them and to do them for everyone. Because it is pleasing in the sight of God and our Savior who desires that all be saved.

19:49 - Saints, it’s time to stir up this gift that God’s placed in us.

23:07 - Do you know why all this is so important? Why I’m bringing it to your attention?

Our nation, USA, is in trouble. And not just us, but every nation on this earth. Saints, Followers of Christ, hear me, Christians aren’t being salt or a light in the world. We, Christians, have become, dull, divided, and running around with your head plucked off blaming, or better yet condemning this person or that, and even siding with the enemy. Let’s be clear we have a mission on this earth, which is not our home, but we are on a battlefield for lives that forgot that Yahweh is God and they belong to Him. We are not to act like the world or indulge in their sins. Our world is dying, being shaken up and we are sitting around awaiting Jesus arrival, doing nothing, expecting everything while we try to slowly mix into the world of politically correctness. We, are a dying nation. My heart aches every time I think about how lacked we have become. How compliance. How fearful and we are the ones who serve the true and living God.  God’s longsuffering doesn’t last forever.

25:36 - God’s calling all Christian to be intercessors, not a few, but all. It’s God’s desire. He’s also calling us to pray against the sins that are stopping us from moving forward as a Christian nation. Yes we are a nation, just as the Jews were back in Old Testament times. But we are divided, just as they are today.

It’s time that we pray for the Christian people to wake up, remember who we are and do what God’s called us to do.

26:15 - Remember “Christ Jesus is the Great Intercessor and we follow Him therefore, we are intercessors, all believers are.”

26:34 - This episode is being released one week after, May 6th, which is called The National Day of Prayer. It is a holiday set aside in the USA, the first Thursday of every May to pray for 7 things, military, families & marriages, country, educational system, media and churches.  Please join me and my friend, the Maryland National Day of Prayer Co-Chairperson, Juin Killingsworth, in praying for our country and the world and as 1 Timothy 2:1-6 tells us, to pray for all so “that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way”.

26:60 - Lyvita: Welcome Juin

28:01 – Juin Prays

33:30 - Saints, I urge you to talk to God a lot during the day, rather it’s in the form of praise, supplication, thanksgiving, praying, speaking in tongues, or intercession, just pray because they are all a form of talking to God. I hope we have helped you get rid of another piece of clutter in your life that has hindered you from growing in Christ. You were made to talk with and commune with the God who created us all. Listen to episode 27 with Sarah Bowling.

34:26 - Then, take some time to go in prayer by praying with the many Saints on Bonus #29 episode which was released on May 6th. It is an hour of praying, scripture, silence and singing over our country, our world. Share it, by keeping the prayers going. This is also a good episode to listen in agreement with, when praying out-loud isn’t an option but nodding, grunting, and humming is.

35:19 - Before we close out I have 4 things I’d like to share:

35:27 - Hanging Out With Jesus Podcast is on a mission to encourage you to pray, and give you the tools and time to do so. Episode 25 talked about praying for the family. Episode 27 was a reminder that you can talk to God anytime and for all reasons. Episode Bonus #29 is an intercessory prayer. So for the next two episodes we are going to pray for specific members of the family. Next episode is about wives praying for their husbands. So put May 27th on your calendar to listen. I’ve invited 3 ladies to join me whose marriages range from 6 months to over 30 years. They have a lot to share. Ask husbands to join in because I have an episode coming up after that one, just for them.

36:46 - This week’s blog digs deeper into 1 Timothy 2:1-6. You see Saints, prayer and Bible study go together. Why would you pray to a God that has provided you with so many resources and not take the time to find out what they are? Well when you study God’s Word, you learn about Him and begin to understand His nature, character, and realize the purpose, calling, He has placed on your life. This is why the Blog is going to focus on the Lord’s Prayer and fasting, after 1 Timothy 2:1-6. So be ready. Get a copy of your free downloadable Personal Prayer Retreat Guide on my website, Lyvitabrooks.com which is also the location of the blog. It’s all about developing a deeper relationship with God.
37:55 - As you know, I am trying to write an online bible study. So this month I am going to bathe it some more in prayer as it is going through the revision process. Please pray that we make the right revisions and not get weary in well doing. Also, if you have a business or idea for one, begin to pray daily for it, being specific, talking to God about it. A good book to help you on this journey is by Becky Davis called 40 Days of Prayer for My Business. All links are in the show notes or comments.
38:29 - As always, share how the episode has blessed you by writing a review or rating it below. Remember my website contains links to this episode’s transcripts, YouTube channel, my contact info and other resources at lyvitabrooks.com.

Well Saints, until we meet again, over the airwaves, intentionally and daily, hang out with Jesus.

Shalom!
