45: The Blessings of Doing What God's Called You To Do
Thursday, December 23, 2021 by Lyvita Brooks with Guest Jewell Utt and Jackie Mapp

Please enjoy this podcast on your favorite podcast platform. Although efforts were made in editing, this transcript may include a few typos. It’s difficult to catch some minor errors. Enjoy!

'Shana Tova', which means 'For a good year' in Hebrew

Today, is another first. I’m videotaping this episode for YouTube and the audio will still come through the podcast platform of your choice. Even Alexa can pull us up now. This transcript isn’t going to be the best but you will receive some of the highlights.

Saints, I’ve been struggling, as you know from the last episode, but I am settled now. I use my brain dump method which I teach in The Fortified Coaching Program to finally help with putting this episode together.

We are going to focus on the Spiritual Discipline of Service. And I have two of my friends, Jewell Utt’s and Jackie Mapp, to share in the conversation. This is going to be…well you’ll see…This is episode #45.

Intro Begins

This is Hanging Out With Jesus Podcast. The place where we help you develop spiritual disciplines, which create space, for you to grow in love with God, your neighbor as yourself. Life can get messy affecting your joy and passion for the things of Christ. It’s through instilling some basic disciplines into your daily lifestyle, to help you manage your time better, that can keep you focused and grounded in your faith. And here is the place you can learn to do just that.

Well Hello Saints! I’m Lyvita, your host of Hanging Out With Jesus Podcast and founder of The Me Project Academy where we help you take managing your time into connecting with what God’s called you to do. I am on a mission to equip and encourage believers to do the work God’s called you to do, with boldness and courage as you stand for Christ in a fallen world.

If you are new to this podcast…WELCOME! And consider subscribing to hangingoutwithjesuspodcast.com so you can receive resources to help you live a more disciplined life that has meaning. And for the Saints of Hanging Out With Jesus Podcast who regularly listen in…thanks. I truly appreciated your support and hearing how this podcast has been a blessing to you.

So stop what you are doing and come walk with me, where we intentionally practice being in the presence of God.

Saints, it’s time to hang out with Jesus and me, Lyvita.

Let’s pray….

Discussion Begins

3:30 – Lyvita: Saints, I’d like to welcome back Jewell Utt’s she was on the podcast before and is still doing some awesome things. We will talk it about later.

Jewell:

Lyvita: I also have my friend Jackie Mapp here for the first time. If you have been listening to the podcast for a while, then you will finally know whom I’ve been referring to when I said I had a friend that introduced me to keeping packages of goodies in my car for those who are homeless and on the street. Here she is…

Jackie:

Lyvita: Did you know that Service was a Spiritual Discipline? Yea, and we all have a gift or gifts that is to be used in service to God. 1 Peter 4: 10 says, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace:”

The question is not rather you have a gift or not. God made you with one or more. Check out all the folk in the Bible, name one that didn’t have a gift or talent. Even with the building of the temple in the wilderness and the one Solomon did, were not the workers identified with their calling. We all have a calling, it’s realizing it, then accepting it, and doing something with it.

If you are a Christian, you have at least one spiritual gift. And that gift or gifts are to be used for the purpose that you SERVE with it for His kingdom.

6:10 -The Spiritual Discipline of Service or Serving reflects the helping, caring and sharing love of God in the world. Service is a way of offering resources, time, treasure, influence and expertise, etc. for supporting others as needed. I read in Adele Calhoun’s handbook, Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices That Transform Your Lives, she wrote, “Acts of service give hands to the second greatest commandment, ‘love your neighbor as yourself.”

6:30 – Lyvita: What are your thoughts on that ladies?

Jewell &/or Jackie:

Lyvita: Ya’ll I asked both of you here because I want folk to see and hear that when God gives you an idea for a ministry or business, just do it, even if you know someone else is doing something similar. Both of your ministries or businesses help homeless but differently. Can you share what your business &/or ministry is, location…?

Jewell &/or Jackie:

Lyvita: I want to read two passages from the Bible and then I have a question for you because on this podcast, we want to do the work of ministry, according to scripture.

1 Corinthians 12: 5-11 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”

Here are the questions discussed:

  • 8:15 -How did you know, you were to serve in this capacity?
  • 19:00 – What were some of your struggles when starting out?
  • 26:45 – What are the things that kept you growing even through challenges?

46:30 – Lyvita: Any words of wisdom you’d like to share about serving with our listeners?

Jewell &/or Jackie:

Lyvita: I’d like to add to this conversation a statement by R. Kent Hughes, who writes books about developing spiritual disciplines. This is what he wrote, “Ministering hearts are disciplined to labor, for they regularly move beyond their comfort zones, they put themselves in vulnerable spots, they make commitments which cost, they get tired for Christ’s sake, they pay the price, they encounter rough seas. But their sails billow full of God’s Spirit.”

Jewell &/or Jackie:

Lyvita: There is one thing I am clear about…God has given each of us a purpose and mission to complete in our life time. We are each born for such a time as this. We are each born to serve, therefore time to find out what that is and do it.
